Five Questions With: #OCGoodwill’s CFO Donald Voska

Getting to know Goodwill of OC’s resident finance and fishing expert CFO Donald Voska.

Name: Donald J. Voska

Title: Chief Financial Officer

Years working at Goodwill of OC: 17 1/2

What is your favorite part about working at Goodwill?

Being directly involved in the fast pace of changes and the growth/ improvements that occur on a daily and consistent basis. No two days are ever the same and the job is never “done.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

My free time is on weekends, which I enjoy spending in Big Bear fishing for rainbow trout. I also enjoy playing tennis once a week.

What is your favorite Goodwill memory?

My favorite Goodwill memory is from the year 2000 on the first pay day after outsourcing our payroll processing. Unfortunately, due to an error, about 60 clients did not have a payroll check that Friday and I was at a loss about how to explain it to them. Then, our V.P. of Human Services at the time offered to tell them. I’ll never forget how she did this.

After assembling the 60 clients, she announced that she had some good news and some bad news. Of course, they wanted to hear the good news first. “The good news,” she exclaimed, “is that you will all be paid on Monday!!” The clients cheered. “The bad news,” she said, “is that you’re not getting paid today.” After a short pause, they again began cheering, “We’re getting paid on Monday!!!” I learned a lot from how she presented this news.

What is your hidden talent?

I don’t know – whatever it is, it is still hidden from me.

To me, Goodwill means…

To me, Goodwill means opportunity – not only for me to be a part of the company, but for the thousands and thousands of people that we help each year. Opportunity to grow, develop, and improve our lives by working together and helping each other.
