Two Outstanding Goodwill Volunteers Honored at 2017 OneOC Spirit of Volunteerism Awards

“Here’s one thing we know – volunteers are at the heart of nonprofits.”

That is the mission behind OneOC’s annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards and a statement we at Goodwill of Orange County could not agree with more.

This year, Goodwill of Orange County is excited to recognize two of its exemplary volunteers who were honored at the 41st annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards last night at the Disneyland Hotel.

Tom Salinger, pictured here in the center, is a long-time advocate of Goodwill’s mission.

Tom Salinger, long-time Goodwill of Orange County Board Member and attorney at Rutan & Tucker, was nominated by our development and executive team for his unyielding passion and advocacy for Goodwill’s mission of putting people facing barriers to work.

Rutan & Tucker’s lawyers are widely known as the best and most effective attorneys in California. Rutan’s commitment to excellence and values set them apart from other top firms. Many Rutan lawyers hold significant positions in trade, charitable and civic organizations. One such lawyer is Thomas “Tom” Salinger.

Tom has extensive experience in construction, landslide, real estate, title insurance and commercial litigation. Currently, Tom serves as co-chair of the Rutan & Tucker’s Construction Law Practice Group and is an active member of its Financial Practices Group. This expertise has been utilized extensively through Tom’s service on Goodwill’s Board of Directors.

In addition to Tom’s individual service to Goodwill, he has been instrumental in increasing Rutan’s philanthropic involvement with Goodwill, such as providing pro-bono legal services.

Tom has been an integral part of Goodwill’s Board of Directors for nearly a decade. He considers his position on the Board as a civic duty to his community – a responsibility that can clearly be demonstrated in his active involvement on the Board. Tom has served as Board Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary and has served as Chair for multiple board committees, including the Executive Committee and the Corporate Compliance Committee.

His enthusiasm for Goodwill and its mission of serving others in our community with barriers is infections — he has influenced and inspired numerous individuals to come alongside and serve.

The second Goodwill Board member being recognized at this year’s awards ceremony is Jody Hudson.

Here is what First American writes about Jody’s volunteering spirit and philanthropic heart:

Jody Hudson is the kind of person who warms the heart of everyone she meets. As Vice President, Senior Relationship Manager at First American Trust, Jody has volunteered for decades. Volunteering and serving others have been a way of life for Jody.

She is involved in a wide assortment of activities including her leadership as Vice Chairman of the Board for Alzheimer’s Orange County, Board Member and member of the Human Services Committee for Goodwill Orange County, active supporter of Race for the Cure, LGBT Center of Orange County, Tierney Center for Veterans Services, and American Heart Association.

For a week each year, Jody travels to Utah to spend her vacation volunteering with BestFriends.org, the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for homeless animals-domestic and wild. As an owner of 4 dogs herself, Jody loves this special time with homeless animals from all over the country, and credits it with changing her life!

Jody’s passion and enthusiasm have inspired others as she generates support for walks, donations and activism among colleagues and friends. Her personal mantra is “obligation gives purpose”, and “all work has dignity if done in quiet communion with God.”

We salute Jody for her inspiring work and the generous spirit she brings to all she does. Thank you, and congratulations Jody!

Goodwill of Orange County is eternally grateful to Tom and Jody for their dedication, leadership, and loyalty. Join us in congratulating these tremendous volunteers!
