Part 1-TV Room Makeover Design Plans & Shopping

TV Room Makeover with Goodwill of Orange County

Have you ever wanted to decorate a space in your home, but felt that you did not have enough money to create the look you wanted?  Well, I am here to tell you that shopping for home décor and furnishings at Goodwill of Orange County is a great way to go.

I am working on a TV Room Makeover to show you how shopping at Goodwill is a wonderful option for giving personality to your home.  Being an interior designer, working within a budget is nothing new to me.  So taking on a challenge in a world where everything seems to be expensive is the perfect opportunity to show how to stretch your design dollar.  With a $500 limit, I am venturing out to four different Goodwill stores in the Orange County area to create a functional and beautiful TV Room.

Challenge:

  • TV room makeover
  • $500 budget

Here is the TV Room currently.  It has beige walls and the seating is not functioning as it should.

The chest that the television is sitting on cannot house the DVR properly.

To get an overall view of the room, here is a drawing to take a peek in the room from overhead.  As you can see, anyone sitting on the sofa under the window does not have a good view of the television.

Design Approach:

I am going to go darker on the walls to have a similar feel to a movie theater to enhance our viewing experience.  The overall color scheme I am looking for is Navy and White.  I want the style to be a mix of global and mid-century modern.

Here is my shopping list:

  • Chair
  • Side Tables
  • Ottoman
  • Entertainment Center
  • Lighting
  • Accessories
  • Pillows
  • Window Treatment

Let’s go shopping! Watch this video of my experience getting the TV room makeover materials.

Here are the treasures I found at Goodwill:

TV Makeover Shopping Budget

Estimated retail price: $1,071.42

Spent at Goodwill $320.24 plus $145.44 for paint, plants, drapery rod and pegs

Total spent $465.68

TOTAL SAVINGS $605.74

Now with all my shopping done within budget, next is to get started on the DIY projects.  Keep on the lookout for my next post for step by step instructions for creating personalized items out of thrift store finds from Goodwill of Orange County for this project.

Remember to #FindTheGood.  Think of Goodwill for your next repurposing project.  Shopping at Goodwill is a triple win: You get big savings, you help the environment by repurposing goods, and you support job creation for your local community.  To learn more about Goodwill of Orange County visit ocgoodwill.org. 1. I love this! So much inspiration – I can’t wait to makeover my own place. And it’s so affordable when you’re shopping at Goodwill.

I had the privilege to recently do a 3-part blog series with Goodwill of Orange County to do a TV Room Makeover. Here is Part 1 that includes the design plans and shopping experience.
