October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Since 1988, the U.S. Department of Labor has commemorated the month of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time where Americans pay tribute to the many societal and workforce accomplishments of men and women with disabilities.

The annual awareness campaign seeks to expand employment opportunities and fight the stigma that people living with disabilities are unable to join the workforce. This year, the theme for NDEAM is “Because We Are EQUAL to the Task,” a recognition of the reality that people with disabilities have the education, training, experience and desire to be successful in the workplace.

Because We Are EQUAL to the Task

At Goodwill, we stand with the U.S. Department of Labor and encourage organizations of all sizes to build business cultures that value a high level of diversity. Having a disability does not hinder someone from being a productive and appreciated member of society or the work force. We encourage business leaders to recruit, hire, retain, and advance qualified individuals with disabilities, as they are a highly valued workforce and help keep the nation’s economy strong.

For almost 90 years, Goodwill of Orange County has been in the business of helping people who are facing barriers to get and keep jobs, which provides purpose, pride and dignity. From assistive technology and soft skills training to physical rehabilitation, supported employment, occupational therapy, and transportation services, we provide a number of services to men and women with disabilities that may be needed to help them excel in their jobs. In addition, we train individuals to work in a variety of high-growth industries outside of Goodwill such as computer programming, construction, financial services, and health care.

Each and every person has the opportunity to achieve his or her fullest potential

As a community, it is important that we all realize the importance of fostering an inclusive workforce, one where every person is recognized for his or her abilities — not only during the month of October, but each and every day of the year. Tweet to us at @OCGoodwill and give someone in your life a shout-out that might be facing a barrier. Celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month with us!
